Tips

Take the altitude slowly

Quito sits at about 2,850 m and Cotopaxi’s park is higher still. Keep the first day easy, drink plenty of water and go light on alcohol.

Dress in layers

Highland days can be warm and sunny, nights cold, and showers come quickly. June to September is usually the driest stretch in the Andes.

Getting around

Buses run often between Quito and Baños from the south terminal. For Cotopaxi, a hired driver or a day tour is simplest. Ecuador uses the US dollar; carry small bills.

Strong sun

On the equator and at altitude the sun burns fast, even when it feels cool. Bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
