Tips

Two altitudes

Cuenca sits around 2,500 m, easy for most people after a day, but Cajas is close to 4,000 m. Walk slowly there, bring water and turn around if you feel unwell.

Cajas weather

Fog, rain and cold wind can arrive in minutes, even on a sunny morning. Bring a waterproof jacket, warm layers and boots, and stay on marked trails.

Getting around

The center is walkable and the tram crosses the city. Taxis are inexpensive; buses to Cajas, Gualaceo and Ingapirca leave from the bus terminal, or hire a driver for the day.

Money and markets

Ecuador uses the US dollar; carry small bills for markets, buses and village lunches. Market days are busiest on weekends, especially Sunday in Gualaceo.
