Tips
Stay alert
Take only what you need to the beach, keep your phone out of sight on the street and use taxis or ride apps at night. Don’t hike forest trails alone; go with a guide or a group.
Watch the clouds
Corcovado and Sugarloaf often sit in cloud. Keep those two flexible and move them to the clearest days; book Corcovado train tickets ahead.
Seasons
May to October is drier and milder. Summer, December to March, is hot with heavy rain showers, and the city fills up for New Year’s and Carnival.
Getting around
The metro links Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo and downtown. Ride apps are cheap and easy for everything else. Cards are accepted almost everywhere.
