Tips
Season and storms
December to April is drier and less humid. Hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk from August to October.
Reserve ahead
El Yunque’s main road needs a timed vehicle reservation, Culebra ferry tickets sell out on weekends and holidays, and bio bay tours fill up. The glow is strongest on dark, moonless nights.
Money and documents
Puerto Rico is a US territory: it uses the US dollar, and US citizens don’t need a passport. Tip as you would on the mainland.
Getting around
Walk in Old San Juan and use taxis or ride shares around the city. A rental car makes El Yunque, Fajardo and Piñones much easier.
