    The Vatican

    1. 08:30

Stairs and a lift take you to the top for a view straight down the length of St. Peter’s Square.

      Food & drink

A calm, local neighborhood next to the Vatican with good food markets.

    1. 08:30

      Pantheon

Tips

Book the big three

The Colosseum, the Vatican Museums and the Borghese Gallery all sell out. Book timed tickets online before you go.

Dress for churches

St. Peter’s and many churches turn away bare shoulders and knees. Carry a light scarf or wear long trousers on church days.

Heat and water

July and August are hot and crowded. Refill your bottle at the free drinking fountains all over the city; the water is good.

Watch your bag

Pickpockets work crowded buses, the metro and spots like the Trevi Fountain. Keep valuables in a zipped front pocket.
