Tips

Watch the wind

The Table Mountain cable car stops in strong wind or thick cloud. Check the status that morning and go up on the first clear day rather than waiting.

Rent a car

A car is the easiest way to see the peninsula and drive the Garden Route. South Africa drives on the left, and it’s best to avoid driving long distances after dark.

Book Robben Island ahead

Ferries sell out in summer and can be cancelled in rough seas. Book early and keep it off your last day in Cape Town.

Stay alert in the city

Keep valuables out of sight, use ride-hailing apps at night and ask your host which areas to avoid walking after dark.
